Growing with Purpose: Why We Infuse Our Own Herbs

Why We Infuse Our Own Herbs

At Migasoka, we believe great skincare starts long before the ingredients reach the bottle. It begins in the soil, with carefully chosen plants, patience, and a genuine appreciation for what nature has to offer.

One question we're often asked is why we take the time to infuse our own herbs instead of simply buying ready-made extracts.

For us, it's about creating products with intention.

It Starts with the Plant

Our long-term vision has always been to grow as many of our own medicinal and aromatic herbs as possible.

Some of the herbs used in our products are already grown right here on our farm, while others are carefully sourced from trusted Australian growers. Building a medicinal herb garden doesn't happen overnight. Many herbs take months—or even years—to establish, and some varieties can be difficult to source altogether.

As our garden continues to grow, so does the range of herbs we're able to harvest ourselves.

For us, this is more than just growing ingredients—it's creating a sustainable farm where every season brings us one step closer to producing even more of what we use.

Why We Choose Oil Infusions

Rather than relying solely on commercial extracts, we slowly infuse many of our herbs into nourishing oils.

This traditional process gently allows the oil to absorb the plant's naturally oil-soluble compounds over time. There are no shortcuts—just patience, carefully selected herbs, and the time needed for nature to do what it does best.

Every batch is infused with care before being filtered and incorporated into our skincare products.

A Connection to the Seasons

Growing herbs has taught us something important: nature works to its own timetable.

Some years a plant flourishes, while another may need a little more time. Weather, rainfall, and the changing seasons all influence what we can harvest.

Rather than seeing this as a challenge, we embrace it. It keeps us connected to the land and reminds us that every harvest is unique.

More Than Skincare

Our love of herbs doesn't stop at skincare.

Many of the plants growing on our farm are also used to create handcrafted herbal tea blends and botanical smoking blends. Each blend celebrates the unique aroma, flavor, and traditional uses of the plants we grow and carefully source.

Looking ahead, one of our biggest dreams is to share these beautiful plants with other gardeners. As our herb gardens mature, we hope to offer selected herb plants for sale so others can grow these remarkable botanicals in their own backyards.

We believe there's something incredibly rewarding about stepping outside, picking fresh herbs, and experiencing the connection between the garden and everyday life.

Building Something That Lasts

Migasoka is still growing—quite literally.

Every season we add new herbs, expand our gardens, and learn more about the incredible plants we work with. Our goal isn't to become the biggest skincare company. It's to create thoughtful, farm-crafted products while sharing our passion for medicinal herbs with our community.

Whether our herbs are grown on our farm or carefully sourced while our gardens continue to grow, every ingredient is chosen with the same commitment to quality, sustainability, and respect for nature.

Because for us, it's never just about what's inside the jar.

It's about the journey that ingredient has taken to get there.

Growing with Purpose

One of the reasons we're so passionate about growing our own herbs is the impact it can have beyond skincare.

Every ingredient that doesn't need to travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers is one less product requiring additional transport, packaging, storage and handling before it reaches our workshop.

By growing more of our own botanicals each year, we're working towards reducing the environmental footprint of our ingredients while creating a more sustainable and transparent supply chain.

Of course, we're not there yet.

Some medicinal herbs are still incredibly difficult to source as live plants, and many take years to establish before they're ready to harvest. Until our gardens mature, we continue to source selected herbs from trusted Australian suppliers who share our commitment to quality.

Our goal has never been perfection overnight—it's continual improvement, one growing season at a time.

Respecting Every Plant

We also believe in making the most of every harvest.

Many of our herbs have more than one purpose, which means very little goes to waste. The same plants that become beautiful oil infusions for our skincare may also be carefully dried for our handcrafted herbal tea blends or botanical smoking blends.

In the future, as our herb gardens continue to expand, we also hope to offer live plants for sale, allowing others to experience the joy of growing medicinal herbs at home.

For us, it's about honoring the entire plant—not just one part of it.

Why We Don't Rely Heavily on Essential Oils

Essential oils are wonderful botanical ingredients and can offer beautiful aromas and unique properties. We use them thoughtfully where they truly add value.

However, many people don't realize just how much plant material is required to produce a tiny bottle of essential oil.

Depending on the plant, it can take many kilograms of flowers, leaves, bark or herbs to produce just a few milliliters of essential oil through steam distillation. That's an incredible amount of plant material, as well as significant water and energy.

That's one of the reasons we love working with whole botanical infusions.

By slowly infusing herbs into nourishing oils, we're able to capture many of the plant's oil-soluble compounds while using the herbs in a gentler, less resource-intensive way. It also allows the natural character of each plant to shine without relying heavily on highly concentrated ingredients.

Our philosophy has always been simple:

Grow what we can.
Source responsibly when we can't.
Use every harvest with purpose.
Create products that respect both people and the planet.

It's a journey we're proud to be on, and one that continues to grow with every season.
